The Warren Mercs handed the Boissevain Border Kings their only loss of the season, and it couldn’t have come at a more inopportune time.
The Mercs edged the Border Kings 7-6 at Tundra Oil & Glas Place in Virden on Sunday, April 10 in a one-game showdown for the Hockey Manitoba Provincial Senior A title.
Warren finished third in the seven-team South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League but stormed through their best-of-seven playoff series downing the Morden Bombers in five games, and then sweeping the Notre Dame Hawks in the final. The Mercs then edged the Minnedosa Bombers 11-10 in a two-game total-goal Provincial semi-final series.
Boissevain won the Tiger Hills Hockey League title without losing a game. After going 18-0-0 in the regular season, the Border Kings swept the Hartney Blues, Virden Oil Kings and Minnedosa Bombers in the playoffs. In the Provincial semi-finals, the Bombers got by the North Central Hockey League champion Miniota-Elkhorn C-Hawks 16-13 in the two-game total-goal series.
